vista search facility

Vista search facility

Hi,
Justa quickie. Does Vista have a search facility where as you are typing it filters out files etc. I know the start menu will have something like this but if I have loads of pictures/mp3's as you type a file name will vista automatically filter out files? This search facility has a name but I can't remember what it's called. Just interested as it would be really useful.
Cheers
Luke

You could try it? Don't be too scared to try things, that is what testing is all about. BTW it does. I searched for the name of a picture file called gta4. It listed files at the top and below that it listed newsgroup posts I had recently made about the game. Pretty substantial search it has :-)

Just to expand on what I already put, if you put the first letter it may not come up with anything. As soon as I put in GT it listed the files with GT in the name.

Yes,
Every Windows Explorer window has a search box in its top-right corner. If the contents of the folder you are viewing is indexed, the contents will change as you type to reflect only those items that match your search.
If the folder is not indexed, you will have to press enter to perform the search, and it will be much slower.
By default, Windows indexes the folders inside your profile (such as the Vista equivalents to My Documents, My Music, My Videos, My Pictures, etc). But you can index any folder you wish.
There's also a neat feature called "stacking", where you can organize the contents of a folder on demand .. for example, you could say "stack by type", and you would see virtual folders that represent each type of file in that folder, which you could then double-click and browse like a normal folder.
Pretty neat stuff :)

In Windows Explorer>Organize>Layout, I like the "Reading Pane" feature. Kind of cool.
